Some of the nation’s bravest surfers battled it out in double overhead waves in the inaugural Gold Rush Big Wave contest at Fistral. With RNLI jetski rescue on hand, the handful of invitees tucked into some hefty barrels and slashed the open faces of monster waves. Cornish surfers Grishka Roberts, Ben Skinner and Llewellyn Whittaker all made it through to the finals, but Jersey’s Scott Eastwood won the £1,000 prize with a perfect 10 point ride in the last few seconds of the competition. The format proved so successful that the British Surfing Association, in association with Skinners Ales, will this year stage two big wave events – one in the spring and one in autumn to coincide with the biggest swells to pound our shores.
