Ben Bourgeois wins BoadmastersUS surfer Ben Bourgeois (USA) won the men’s contest at this year’s Rip Curl Boardmasters Festival held at Fistral Beach, Newquay.

In a hard fought final, the American defeated Brazilian ripper Heitor Alves in tricky, 2-3ft surf to win the 5 star World Qualifying Series (WQS).

"I haven't won a contest in so long, so just being up there and getting that feeling is so awesome. I'm stoked," said Bourgeois after the presentation.

"I've been on a little roll lately and I just wanted to keep it going here in England. I was just trying to take it heat by heat and it all came out my way at the end. I'm so happy."

The contest draws pro surfers from across the globe and is Britain’s best known surf event.

Unfortunately, Cornwall’s surfers failed to make it through to the final rounds of the competition but the likes of Sam Lamiroy and Newquay’s Mark Harris put in a great performance on home turf.

The Rip Curl Boardmasters Festival is Europe’s biggest surf, skate and music festival, which this year attracted over 250,000 people to Cornwall’s famous wave spot.

But there is more to the Boardmasters festival than just surfing. The final action sports contest of the festival, the Vans Summer Sessions was completed after a fierce weekend of skateboard ramp competition.

The final placings saw Sam Beckett in third, Terence Bougdour second and Renton Millar take the victory and a total of $7000. Not bad for a week’s work.
