Sam Lamiroy slashing his way to tour victoryPerranporth based surfer Sam Lamiroy has won the 2007 UK Pro Surf Tour by showing the best overall performance over eight events this season.

This is the second time that Lamiroy, originally from Tyneside, has won the tour title. He has proved he has not lost any of his skill in an ever increasing competitive field of surfers that compete on the tour from all over the world.

With big names such as Russell Winter and Alan Stokes, plus international riders such as Toby Atkins and Micah Lester, competing on this year’s tour, Lamiroy had his work cut out to achieve his goal.

It has been an exciting tour with more twists and turns than usual. It all began in Croyde at Easter, when Lamiroy started his bid for the tour title by winning the event.

Since then a cast of outstanding surfers has taken pole position. One of this year’s favourites, the new British champion Mark Harris, looked set to take the tour title but was ruled out due to injury in the closing month.

Newquay’s Llewellyn Whittaker made a last minute dash for the title with an impressive Triple Crown win but fell at the last hurdle when he went out in the semis of the final event, the Gul Newquay Open won by Alan Stokes.

In the end just 12 points separated Lamiroy and second placed Whittaker, the narrowest margin for victory in tour history.

Other tour winners included Gwen Spurlock from Swansea who won the Women's and the U16 Girls Grommet titles.

Jayce Robinson from St Ives won the Pro Junior Title and Alex Baker of Croyde won the U16 Boys from a very strong field of up and coming surfers.

However one of the future stars of surfing Harry Timson from Newquay retained his Under 12 Open title by winning all 5 of the competitions he entered this year.

Newquay’s Chris Thomson was the longboard champion following his win at the Fat Face Night Surf in June.

Dave Reed from the UK PST said: “We would like to thank 2007 Tour sponsors, Skinners Brewery, G Shock and Relentless for all their support and assistance throughout the year and the individual title sponsors for each of the eight tour events. Also to all the staff and competitors who have all come together to make 2007 a very successful year.”

The tour will now be on a break until Easter 08 when the first event will be the Saltrock Open in Croyde.
