Conceived in 2005 by Cai Waggett (now manager of The Wavehouse, Bude) began as a way for the locals of Sandymouth Beach to compete against each other in a friendly competition. It was opened up to a few other like-minded people and the first contest was a massive success, blessed with beautiful weather and enormous, perfect surf. The second year saw some minor changes. With the reputation of the contest already glowing from the previous years phenomenal surf. As luck would have it, the second Rocktober contest was once again bathed in glorious autumn sunshine, and a gentle, clean 2ft swell. This year’s Rocktober contest promises to be just as impressive. After two successful years, Cai Waggett stepped down from the running of the contest to let 22 year old ‘Eggy’ Alway take the helm. Due to the huge amount of interest the contest now has, there will also be an increase in allotted entrants this year. Once again backed by The Wavehouse, sponsorship this year is from West wetsuits, Eastpak, Gecko Headgear and the National Trust. The chosen charity to which proceeds from this year’s event will go is the locally based ‘Little Rays Of Sunshine’ appeal for children with Downs Syndrome. Categories include Shortboard, Longboard, Bodyboard, and Womens. The contest will be followed by a buffet prize-giving ceremony at Sandymouth Café. |
