Surfers attempted to break the world record for the most number of people riding one wave at the same time Polzeath in Cornwall on Sunday 2 September. The World Surfing Record attempt was organised by Surf Up Surf School in association with Ticket to Ride ‘Worldwide Surfing Adventures’. This record attempt was unique because the same attempt was taking place in seven other countries across the world as part of an event called Earthwave - ‘the global surfing challenge.’ With over 120 surfers taking part, money was raised to aid Surfers Against Sewage for their research into how global warming is affecting the environment and ultimately the waves we ride. Spectators gathered across the shoreline to watch the valiant surfers aged from six to sixty, including legendary comedian Harry Enfield with family in tow. Today is all about getting involved and having fun out in the water whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause,” said Pete Craske, Founder of Surf Up Surf School. Waves were ridden, cheers were loud, the question is, did we take the record? Having watched the video footage through, the finest attempt came on the lucky third wave, carrying 31 triumphant surfers all the way to beach. So in typically English fashion, the weather was grey, the sea was mild, the attempt was commendable and for everyone down there, it was the taking part that counted. The Earthwave world record went to Brazil which with 84 surfers standing on one wave together. |
