Polzeath Gears Up for Longboard Classic
The 8th annual Jesus Longboard Classic will be held in Polzeath, North Cornwall over the weekend of 11th-12th October, and expectations are high for more great surfing after the success of previous years.
It’s a great contest for both those who have not entered a competition before and for those who are seasoned contest surfers. The Jesus Longboard Classic has a well deserved reputation for its friendly atmosphere and relaxed vibe, as well as for the later rounds being highly competitive.
Organisers Christian Surfers UK have partnered with Nineplus, Tubestation, Finisterre, 360 photography and Era, along with new sponsor Riz Boardshorts, to put on the 2014 Jesus Longboard Classic.
This event follows on from part one of the 22nd Jesus Surf Classic held at Croyde over the weekend of 13th – 14th September, which attracted many of the UK’s top women and junior surfers.
As a result of the continued growth of the Jesus Surf Classic, Christian Surfers took the decision eight years ago to give the Longboard community their own dedicated event. This was done to enlarge the entry numbers and increase the number of categories being contested. It was also to give the competitive longboard community a more focused stage on which to highlight the progression of UK longboarding.
The event has always attracted some of the top longboard surfers in the UK, with previous winners including Ben Skinner, Ben Howarth, Angus Murray, Emily Currie and Candice O’Donnell.
Polzeath Beach is ideal for longboarding, and no matter what the weather conditions, the surfers will be well looked after at the event HQ, Tubestation- Polzeath’s unique ‘surf lounge’.
Phil Williams, Contest Director and head of Christian Surfers UK, comments, “After such great events in previous years, we are very excited to be running the Jesus Longboard Classic again this year at Polzeath. As with ‘The Jesus’, there’ll be some great hospitality for the competitors, as well as a prize fund of £1,000, with first place in the Open event winning £250. We’re looking forward to seeing if last year’s Mens and Women’s Open winners, Angus Murray and Emily Currie, can retain their titles.”
If will be a very busy week or so for Christian Surfers UK, as the previous week they will be hosting four showings of the movie Beyond Sight , with guest star of the show, blind Brazilian surfer Derek Rabelo, in Newquay, Bristol, London and Swansea. CSUK will also be running the Jesus Surf Classic (Part 2) with Junior Mens, Open Mens and Masters categories in Croyde on Saturday 11th October. All information on these events can be found at www.christiansurfers.co.uk
Christian Surfers UK are very grateful to the key sponsors and also to Cornwall County Council and RNLI life guards for their assistance. Combining the resources of these organisations with around 40 volunteers from Christian Surfers UK and the Tubestation should make for a top class competition.
CSUK are also very pleased that although not forming part of their contest series, the event is being endorsed by the British Longboard Union (BLU).
