Russell Winter Trains Juniors
Europe’s most successful surfer Russell Winter showed his continued support for the development of English surfing this weekend by providing free coaching to the English Junior Surfing Team.
The Newquay pro surfer used his unparalleled contest knowledge and experience to train England’s best up-and-coming young surfers. The Acorn Blue ESF Junior Surfing Team were able to test strategies and techniques they will be employing next month when they will be competing in Portugal as part of the European Junior Championships.
The team had another coup as surf clothing manufacturer – Protest announced on Friday that they will be continuing their support for the English Team by providing them with team kit for the competition.
After the successful weekend, Russell commented: “It was great to kick the year off with such an awesome coaching event we had fantastic waves and weather, the juniors really improved over the two days, and I’m sure they will do us proud in Portugal.”
The team which comprises of eight surfers, five bodyboarders and a longboarder received video coaching and participated in an array of drills designed to optimise their chances of beating their counter parts from the rest of Europe.
Under 16 surfer Luke Dillon said: “It’s such an honour to once again be picked to represent England and to have Russ coach us is brilliant, there isn’t another surfer in the country with his competition experience so we’ve all learned a lot.”
The English team still receives no government funding, so the team would like to thank the 2010 team sponsors: Acorn Blue, Protest, Rip Curl ESF Surf School, Coastline Coasteer, Rob Barber Bodyboarding School, Shoppfitter.com, Print Wear Clothing, Carnmarth Hotel, Sunset Surf, Dream Sessions, Sorted Surf Shop, Alder, Carve, Surfgirl and ThreeSixty Magazine.
The team will be travelling to Portugal on 6 May and and are looking for a top four placing. Russell Winter will be conducting further training weekends on the 15-16 May, 19-20 June, 10-11 July, 11-12 September, 9-10 October. These weekends are open to all surfers (not just members of the English surf team) who wish to fine tune their surfing and benefit from his vast knowledge of the sport.
