UKSRL VB Summer Series – Round 3 Watergate Bay
More rain for Round 3 of the UKSRL VB Summer Series at Watergate Bay held on the 11th July with a 6ft clean but building swell. Everyone knows the deal with the VB Summer Series: it’s about consistency and in surf making the right decisions at the right time and some luck.
The ability to row well is just one of the skill sets needed to successfully row a surfboat in surf. Whilst the IRB was laying the buoys the two Porthtowan womens crews rolled and needed assistance to get back to shore. With a good 6ft swell some crews were confident; others decided to fight another day.
Two crews from London made the long journey to Watergate Bay. Mike Dowell’s Twickenham Tridents fresh from rowing at Henley Royal Regatta felt they had the fire power to take on the current leaders Porthtowan Blue Bali. The Molesey Marauders turned up with four giants including 2 x World Champion and Beijing Olympic Silver Medallist Toby Garbett and Oxford Blue Tom Parker. The only problem was that none of them had rowed a surfboat in surf before and therefore they had no idea what could possibly happen to them.
Surfboat rowers are made of stern stuff, but the women are amazing – what they lack in power they make up for with guts.
A big thank you to the RNLI Jet Ski and the Hayle SLSC IRB crew for providing safety cover at the event and also to The Hotel & Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay for allowing the UKSRL to use the venue.

Each crew will receive 15pts when on the start line for their first race. Upon
conclusion of a race the additional points will be calculated as follows:
1st 7pts, 2nd 5pts, 3rd 4pts, 4th 3pts, 5th 2pts, 6th 1pt
7 Mens crews and 6 Womens crews attended and crews were randomly
drawn into lanes.
