Wave Pool for Cornwall
Cornwall could have the UK’s first inland wave pool as early as 2010.
Retallack Resort & Spa has been granted permission for a £25 million development – Retallack Surfside which will feature accommodation, restaurants, bars, shops and conference facilities, as well as the first artificially generated surf wave in the UK.
Andy Sturt, Regional Surf Development Coach from The British Surfing Association, commented : “The project offers huge and exciting potential to the local surfing community as well as drawing in visitors and surfers from the wider global surfing community. The BSA is very supportive towards the resort as it will definitely enhance Cornwall as a major surfing destination and the possibility of working with the resort in the future, using the facility as a centre of excellence for training development squads.”
The heart of the village will overlook the central attraction – the UK’s first inland surf wave – a revolutionary venture which is guaranteed to attract a large number of surfers, bodyboarders and spectators to the village each year. The wave will enable surfers of all levels to practice and learn before attempting Cornwall’s famous surfing beaches such as Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay and will also guarantee year round surfing when sea conditions are unsuitable.
The Retallack Surfside area covers just over 100 acres and is set in green rolling hills close to the spectacular North Cornish Coast and equidistant from Newquay, Rock and Padstow.
