Winter Gets Wildcard Entry into the Boardmasters
Newquay surfer Russell Winter will aim to reclaim the title of Boardmasters Champion this summer, thanks to wild card entry into the event.
Winter is one of three Cornish surfers, along with Oli Adams from Newquay and Jayce Robinson from St Ives, to get the call up for the event usually reserved for the very best professional surfers on the world tour.
The surfer, who is generally regarded as Britian’s best ever surfer, last won the event 10 years ago. He will use his local advantage to try to regain the title at ths year’s Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters in association with Vans, scheduled for 7-12 August at Fistral Beach Newquay.
Relentless Boardmasters is the biggest surf event in the UK and a proving ground for the best surfers in the world. This years prize money set at a UK record breaking figure of $155,000 will provide a great incentive to see the performance level rise yet again.
Winter received his wild card due to his outstanding performance last year winning the Relentless Super Series: three events on the UK Pro Surf Tour held during 2011 with venues at Lynmouth, Thurso and Newquay. This year’s Relentless Super Series starts later in the year with its first stop at Lynmouth in Devon.
