Zapcats in Big Wave Action

zapcatsZapcat Racers will face gruelling BIG surf at Fistral Beach, Newquay for the final two rounds of the aptly named King of the Surf title.

With quite a few other Championship titles at stake, it could be an exciting weekend for all involved. For the first time it could be the youngsters dominating proceedings, with some sibling rivalry thrown into the mix.

Current champions Bluesheets I (Craig Davis & Rob Martin) will be battling it out for the King of the Surf title with the new Rookie Champions SeaVacation II (Jack Weller & Nick Martin). Nick, younger brother of Rob is the youngest competitor in the series and won’t be legally allowed to toast any wins for another couple of seasons!

Somerset based Delta Jets (Ashley Chappell & Chris Rex) may also have something to say about that result too as well as the outcome of the Team Championship, which they are just leading with BladeRun (Justin Whithorn & Chris Baldwin).

Big surf is a great leveller as even the most skilful pilots and co-pilots can come unstuck, it requires the utmost concentration, timing, nerve and a little bit of luck to avoid a stopper wave that can hand the advantage back to their opponents.

The Zapcat guys and girls will certainly deliver excitement and thrills to rival even the Ryder Cup with many tales to tell at the Annual Zapcat Awards night on Saturday evening.

The season kicked off in April at Fistral and it is fitting we return here having visited Belfast, Edinburgh, Prestatyn, Barry Island and Aberdeen along the way.

Twenty Zapcat teams will be up to the challenge and ably assisted by the Zapcat and RNLI Safety & Rescue teams. Racing starts at noon on Saturday 2nd October. The event is free to view and for Zapcat spotters out there look out for the new shape hull of the EVO model being tested for the first time in the surf at a UK championship venue.

Next year will see two Zapcat surf events in Newquay – one at Watergate Bay and one at Fistral.
